GOOD PRACTICES IN EUROPE FOCUSSING ON VEHICLE ROADWORTHINESS AND INSPECTION

Vehicle inspection and adequate maintenance schemes are the key elements in order to support roadworthiness on the European roads. By checking a wide range of systems and mechanical parts, the inspection enables a vehicle not only to drive in a safer, but also in a more sustainable way.

Today, as the European Commission is working on a new legislative framework for vehicle inspection, and considering the different approaches existing within the Member States of the EU, it is high time to think about the role and the future of vehicle inspection, especially in a context of emerging new technologies, such as electric-powered vehicles or on-board diagnosis for electronic systems and emissions.

The aim of this first day of conference is to exchange information and good practices between Member States, and receive the point of view of the Commission on the following topics and questions:

  • The periodicity of the inspection: some evidence based casestudies
  • Should the 2-wheelers be included in the inspection schemes as they are over represented in accident statistics?
  • roadside inspection: information exchange, a future key factor of success
  • Harmonization and mutual approval between Member States: a long term view
  • The challenges of the electric vehicles
  • Interactions with on-board diagnosis during inspection and maintenance
  • Training of the technical inspectors of the future
